Book Recommendation: Happy Mum, Happy Baby

I happened to come across Happy Mum, Happy Baby: My adventures in motherhood by Giovanna Fletcher in the new arrivals section in my local library in London, and I am so glad that I did! This book has been my travel companion during the summer and I liked it so much that I decided to take it back with me to Oman, and it travelled with me to Australia too on a library loan! After many renewals and a *cough* small library fine, I think it’s time to return it as we are back in London now.

I love to read during feeds in between looking into my beautiful baby’s eyes. This was the perfect read for me at this point in my life, and I hope it will be for you too. There is so much we can relate to, as mummas, and the author seems to cover everything that we experience, we think, we wonder…it’s so incredible how we can lead such similar lives in the motherhood club, no matter how different we are. Without giving too much away, in this real-life account Giovanna Fletcher describes her journey in motherhood with insights into pregnancy, labour, breastfeeding, travelling with children, balancing work, bedtime struggles and much more. She continuously reminds us throughout that this is not an advice book, it is simply a narration of her own personal experiences, to which she hopes we can connect to. I definitely could. I love how genuine she is in each chapter, and also how funny she can be without even trying!

Here’s a funny/cute story. In all honesty, I had never heard of Giovanna Fletcher before, but after I did the whole google search thing I discovered that all along I had known about her! The 2005 hit single ‘All About You’ was written for her, by her husband and McFly lead singer Tom Fletcher. I loved this song during my teen years, and little did I know I would be reading about the motherhood experiences of the subject of the song years later! Check out Tom Fletcher’s rendition of this song in his wedding speech – one of the cutest I have ever heard.

Giovanna and Tom are an incredibly adorable couple, and very popular on the internet I have come to learn, and I am in such admiration of their family life. They were childhood sweethearts and are now parents to three sons; Buzz, Buddy and Max. Both are authors, and Happy Mum, Happy Baby is Giovanna’s first non-fiction book. After receiving such high acclaim for her book, she has gone on to release a series of podcasts where she continues the discussion with other well-known parents. On 29th November 2018, Giovanna will be holding a live Happy Mum, Happy Baby event at the Shaw Theatre in London. Unfortunately I will not be in London then, but if you are attending, enjoy!
