I have recently discovered Muscat Mums, a community of, well, mums in Muscat! It really is quite a wonderful system and a great way to meet other mummas and for your little one(s) to interact with other little ones. Mums from all over the city volunteer to run this organisation and plan family-friendly events, arrange playdates for different age groups, hold support sessions, offers rentals from an impressive collection of books, toys and baby gear (all of which I am guessing mums have donated in the past – lovely!) and much more.

Membership is only 10 OMR for a year and as well as access to all the awesome things listed above, you can claim discounts using your Muscat Mums card at a wide range of places across Muscat, from restaurants to soft play centres and everything in between.
Find out more about Muscat Mums on their website. Here, you can find out how to join and also if you are interested how to volunteer as a coordinator. It is all really flexible as all mums understand how time is precious. There are some really helpful resources available on the website too that provide information on local parks, play areas, hospitals, schools and many other topics that occupy a mumma’s brain space.
While I’m on the subject of groups to join in Muscat, it’s worth mentioning there are a few other networks that make the transition to expat life a lot easier:
InterNations: This is a global company that is stationed in hundreds of cities, including Muscat. The ambassadors here hold really fun regular events, allowing a chance to meet other like-minded individuals. However, since Cutie Baby arrived in our lives we haven’t been to any events as I would probably say this is a group for pre-baby life.
Muscat Mums: There is another, wider community of Mums on the Facebook page Muscat Mums, often confused with the other group of the same name. This group is made up of thousands of mums (and some dads too I think!). Here, you can buy and sell new and pre-loved items or simply discuss what’s on your mind (as the kind people of Facebook keep asking you) and the other mums are always really helpful in sharing their thoughts, ideas and experiences.
What’s Happening Oman?: This is an even larger group on Facebook, where you can also exchange advice and thoughts, but here with the wider community of Oman. And of course as the name suggests, you can keep updated on the latest happenings in the country. If you are interested you can join more sub-groups such as What’s Happening, Oman – Secondhand Items Only, What’s Happening Oman Jobs, What’s Happening Oman Real Estate, What’s Happening in the Garden, Oman?, What’s Happening – Buying and selling cars in Oman, and What’s Happening Sohar, Oman?.
I wish someone would have told me about all of these groups on arrival in Muscat. But I guess expat life is all about discovering things along the way!
